Final Project Musings

Five things I learned about type:
The things that I learned about type are type anatomy, typography rules, and layout. From studying type anatomy I learned the different parts such as the difference between the aperture and the counter. The aperture is partially enclosed negative space in a letter form where the counter is fully enclosed negative space in a letter form. Also I have learned nineteen different typography rules such as to avoid combining typefaces that are too similar in appearance, being mindful not to use too many typefaces at any one time, and use type sizes that legibility studies prove most readable. I also learned different layouts and the importance of it. I found that I prefer left aligned type rather than center aligned. Also I learned you can take everyday average things and lay them out in practice to make them visually more interesting, such as a weather report.

Five things I should have learned:
From Brendon I learned I should have incorporated more text and not be afraid to use a lot of body copy. Kelsey taught me that using a basic shape such as a rectangle can create a clean balanced look when aligning type to the shape. Delaney's publication taught me that use of consistent color and typeface can create a very unified look for a theme-like feel. From Jordan's publication I learned that using very simple design and few words in a typography rules poster can create an emphasis on the most important part of the rule and allow for the viewer to easily remember it. From Jane's Publication I learned that a great logo can be created from just type and can be very eye catching and will allow for many typographic examples. She also taught me great use of exploring layout and placing forms on angles.

Five things I refuse to learn about type:
1. I refused to learn that serif type can look great as the main font of a publication.
2. I refused to learn that complexity in typography layouts can be successful.
3. I refused to learn that a logo can be based just on type alone without a shape or image.
4. I refused to learn that consistent hang lines can create unity in a publication.
5. I refused to learn that layout is easiest when using a grid.
6. I refused to post to the blog online during my process.
